Lincoln Ventures has developed a new device for measuring sub-surface moisture on pavements and roads which could help identify water build-up under the road surface and speed up repairs after flood damage.
The Road Moisture Sensor, currently at prototype stage, is non-invasive, so avoids drilling holes in the pavement surface or inserting probes.
It calculates a moisture profile, measuring average moisture content and moisture content at different depths.
The Road Moisture Sensor is based on the TDRI moisture profile meter (pdf file 46KB), which enables a new technique for quantitative, non-invasive and non-destructive imaging of near-surface moisture content profile of composite materials.
The development of the TDRI is supported by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology.
